Week 8 Review
Week 8 gave us even some more incredible matchups. Here were some of this week’s best games:
#2 De Smet @ #2 (SS) St. Mary’s 35-37
In a year of big time matchups, we may have just come across one of the biggest ones yet, and it did not have the outcome that some of us expected. Friday night, the De Smet Spartans traveled a little bit south to play the St. Mary’s Dragons. This game was neck-and-neck for all 4 quarters. After the first half, St. Mary’s got up to a 17-14 lead at the half. Led by RB Cam Sharp, the Spartans responded with 14 points in the 3rd quarter to take a 28-24 lead over the Dragons. However, freshman QB Ja’Khori Battle had other plans. After a TD pass from Battle to Davion Frazier, the Dragons went up 31-28. De Smet would then reclaim the lead with about 4 minutes to go with a TD run from Sharp. But when it mattered most, the Dragons took the last 4 minutes of the game to drive down the field and cap it off with a game-winning TD pass from Battle to Caleb Harris, giving the Dragons a huge 37-35 upset against one of the best teams in Missouri.
#3 CBC @ #5 (SS) Cardinal Ritter 20-30
On Thursday night, we saw arguably 2 of the best teams in the state face off against each other in downtown St. Louis, where the Cardinal Ritter Lions hosted the CBC Cadets. CBC made a statement to start the game with back-to-back touchdowns from Daylen Austin-Harvey, leading 14-0 after the first quarter. But the Lions would find an answer and respond with 2 TDs of their own, going into halftime with a score of 14-12. Ever since the 1st quarter, the Ritter defense absolutely locked down the explosive CBC offense, holding Austin-Harvey to only 6 rush yards and keeping the entire CBC offense at only 251 total yards of offense. While the Ritter defense was doing their work, the offense put up 3 touchdowns in the second half. After going down 14-0, the Lions scored 30 unanswered points to give themselves an absolute statement win against the CBC Cadets.
Lift for Life @ #9 Chaminade 8-21
In a very defense heavy game, Chaminade was able to squeak one out against Lift for Life Friday night. Led by QB Mo Smith, F.K.A. J’Mareon Barnes, if you were confused, the Chaminade offense was able to get the job done, despite only putting up 234 total yards of offense. Smith led the charge, with 103 rushing yards and 107 passing yards with a TD in both those respective categories. Chaminade hosts Francis Howell next week and looks to finish out a very strong season.
#1 East St. Louis @ Naperville North 35-8
This week, East St. Louis finished their absolute dominant season with another very strong victory against the Naperville North Huskies. I am now going to give you some jaw-dropping stats. Ever since the start of their regional schedule, the East St. Louis Flyers have gone 6-0. They have allowed 14 total points over that stretch. They have scored 319. In their previous 6 games, they have had an average point differential of 51 PPG. That is absolute dominance right there. Last year, the Flyers steamrolled through almost everyone they played, but could not get the job done in the state championship. We will see if they can finish the job this year.
Marquette @ Lindbergh 25-28
Down in Lindbergh, the Flyers hosted the Marquette Mustangs in a powerful Suburban matchup. Led by the RB duo of Noah Norman and Kevin Fisher, the Flyers were able to get up early and keep it that way. Norman led the way with 2 first half TDs, giving them a 21-10 lead at halftime. After a third TD run from Norman, the Flyers got up 28-17 and were able to hold the Mustangs the rest of the game. After a 0-3 start, the Lindbergh Flyers have gone 4-1, all 4 wins being against very quality opponents.
